Not just horsing around
Instructor David Lichman, right, demonstrates a technique for owners wishing to desensitize their horses to distraction.
The three-day clinic ended Monday.

Pat Parelli, an internationally renowned horse trainer, has developed a unique method of working with horse and rider that actually transforms the horse/human experience.  Parelli trainers Susan Nelson from Los Angeles California and Maurice Thibault from Las Vegas Nevada (via Canada) came to Saddle Valley Farm April 15-18th to run a two day beginner clinic followed by a two day advanced beginner clinic.  Most students took both clinics – spending 4 full days with their horses learning and “playing” the seven games developed by Parelli.

To quote Pat Parell "If all I did was teach you how to think, act and play more like a horse, I'd be handing you the keys to doing anything you wanted... To teach your horse everything yourself, to reach your highest goals, and to have your horse think you are his greatest friend on Earth."  Parelli’s methods give the rider of every level a way to communicate with his or her horse and provides a great foundation for a beginner rider.  It’s also a fun new way to work with your horse on the ground.

After 4 days on and off the saddle, the results were astonishing.  Horses who had been problems were responding to simple hand motions.   For example – backing up in response to the wagging of a finger and jumping over barrels in response to the movement of a carrot stick.  The culmination came on day four on the saddle, using nothing more than a rope halter and a lead line – NO REINS OR BITS.  The horses went great and the humans were amazed!

Nelson and Thiibault said Saddle Valley is the perfect venue and are planning to come back in October to work with some of the same students on the next steps, and to work with a new beginner group.  Some of those auditing the clinic this week can’t wait to learn Parelli’s 7 games with their horses in the fall.  Saddle Valley is already scheduled to host two other Parelli clinics and one Kenny Harlow clinic this year.  Kenny Harlow is a well-respected John Lyons trainer. See clinic schedule below.
